US Lawmakers Call for Probe Into Shein and Temu Over Design Theft Allegations

**US Lawmakers Call for Probe Into Shein and Temu Over Design Theft Allegations**

Two major online shopping platforms, Shein and Temu, are facing serious concerns from US lawmakers over alleged intellectual property theft. On December 2, 2025, two senior US senators formally urged the Biden administration to begin an investigation into the companies.

Senator Bill Cassidy and Senator Tammy Baldwin alleged that Shein and Temu may have stolen design ideas from US-based brands and small businesses. They claim that the platforms copied original designs and sold them on their sites without permission. Both companies are headquartered outside the United States and have gained popularity for offering fast-fashion products at very low prices.

In a letter to the Department of Homeland Security and the US Trade Representative, the senators asked for strict action. They requested a probe into any violations of trade law or intellectual property rules. The letter stated that American creators deserve protection and that major e-commerce platforms should be held accountable if they are copying designs illegally.

Shein has denied any wrongdoing in past accusations and said it takes copyright issues seriously. It also claimed to have a page where creators can file complaints. Temu, which is owned by the Chinese company PDD Holdings, has not responded publicly to the latest accusations. However, the company also has a rising presence in US markets.

Experts say this issue could impact the trade relationship between the United States and China. It may also raise questions about the growing power of online retailers who source products quickly and cheaply. Lawmakers are concerned that lack of proper oversight could hurt small businesses and local designers.

The senators warned that ignoring these issues could lead to further loss of income for American creatives. They said that if violations are confirmed, penalties or trade limitations could be considered. The investigation, if started, would likely examine how these companies obtain their product designs and whether they are following US laws.

This is not the first time major foreign retailers have faced such criticism, but recent pressure may increase regulatory action. The Biden administration has not yet announced if it will open a formal investigation.
