**James Solomon Defeats Jim McGreevey in Jersey City Mayoral Race**
Progressive candidate James Solomon has won the Jersey City mayoral runoff election, defeating former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey. The election results were confirmed on Tuesday, making Solomon the incoming leader of New Jersey’s second-largest city.
Solomon, a city councilman and vocal advocate for transparency and affordable housing, secured the victory with strong support from young voters and progressive groups. His campaign focused on issues like reforming city government, expanding access to public services, and improving transportation infrastructure.
Jim McGreevey, who served as governor of New Jersey from 2002 to 2004, had hoped his political experience would win over voters. He was the early favorite due to his statewide name recognition and support from traditional Democratic circles. However, critics pointed to past controversies, including his resignation from the governor’s office in 2004.
The runoff became necessary after no candidate secured more than 50 percent of the vote in the initial election last month. Solomon and McGreevey, as the top two finishers, advanced to the December 2 runoff.
According to the latest vote count, Solomon received over 55 percent of the vote, while McGreevey trailed with just under 45 percent. Voter turnout was higher than expected for a local runoff, with civic groups noting strong engagement from first-time and younger voters.
Solomon thanked his supporters during a speech on Tuesday night, saying he would work to “make Jersey City more affordable, inclusive, and accountable.” He also promised to address public safety concerns and increase public access to transportation and parks.
McGreevey conceded and congratulated Solomon, stating that he hopes the new administration will unite the city. He also thanked his campaign volunteers and said he would continue working on reentry and rehabilitation programs, efforts he had led before his candidacy.
James Solomon will officially take office in January 2026. Until then, the outgoing administration will work with Solomon’s team to ensure a smooth transition.
The mayoral win marks a major shift in Jersey City politics, as younger voters and grassroots campaigns play a growing role in shaping local leadership.
